She was born on 31st January 1975 in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh (India) as Aquarius her Zodiac sign. Preity’s real name is Preetam Singh Zinta, which originates her from a Sikh family. Durganand Zinta was father of Preity and was an officer in Indian Army. Her father and mother both had met an accident in which her father, Durganand Zinta died but eventually her mother Nilprabha Zinta was moved on to bedridden after this accident. Zinta has two brothers, Deepanker Zinta a year older and Manish Zinta a year younger respectively, as one of her brother is commissioned an officer in Indian Army. She decided to pursue psychology as earlier she was going to do English honours and attended Bombay University. After receiving a degree in criminal psychology from St.Bedes College, she stepped her career in modeling and even in commercial (add films) actress (was seen in Lyril’s soap ads). At first she was meant to make her acting with Shekhar Kapoor’s debut – Tara Rum Pum Pum opposite Hrithik Roshan but unfortunately it never happened to take off. Her first film should be Soldier but the reasoning of delaying, Dil Se (’98) released first. This film was her first attempt in which she gained Filmfare Best Award for her performance. Slowly, slowly her career has been taking the role; that of exactly a typical shinning star of Bollywood i.e. neither many hits nor many flops. The year’s highest grossing films- Koi… Mil Gaya & Kal Ho Naa Ho in (’03), she was best female leading role in two of these. As “Naina” in Kal Ho Naa Ho, for her fabulous acting she had received several awards and even Filmfare Best Actress Award too. Her averagely received Lakshya, box office hit Veer-Zara, both in (’04) and giving semi-hit Salaam Namaste (’05) gave her the biggest turned out overseas hits. She also joined the group of top stars (Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Saif Ali Khan Arjun Rampal, and Priyanka Chopra) in Temptation 2004 concert, which had gained a huge success in all over the world. In May 2006, she had received an invitation to represents the Bollywood at Cannes Film Festival along with the great friend and a fantastic film director Karan Johar. They didn’t let go this opportunity from their hands, as they wanted to promote Karan Johar’s latestly film Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna in which Preity also stars. She has also written the three columns for BBC South Asia.
